Deodato – Prelude (Also known as 2001)

Deodato 2001

From Wikipedia:

Prelude, also known as 2001, is a 1972 album of Brazilian keyboardist Eumir Deodato. With the signature track “Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)” (an arrangement of the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey), Prelude would be the biggest hit Deodato and CTI Records ever had.

The album features guitarist John Tropea on three tracks, bassists Ron Carter and Stanley Clarke, and Billy Cobham on drums.

The funk-influenced version of the “Introduction” from Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, entitled “Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)”, won the 1974 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and went to No. 2 in the pop charts in the US, No. 3 in Canada, and No. 7 in the UK.

TopCat – Pass My Robe (Instrumental Album)

TopCat (aka Apollo Treed) is back with an instrumental album of smooth shit titled “Pass My Robe“. Specifically, this release is “a smooth alternative to the commercial radio garbage” that exists in the world. This album is “pure Hip hop / jazz fusion to soothe the soul!”

Btw, if you’re not familiar with TopCat and his work, you need to head on over to check out his podcast SOUPKITCHEN EXCLUSIVES as fast as you can. I just listened to the latest episode yesterday and not only are there some fire gems on the podcast, Top breaks shit down on the mic unlike no other. Go get yourself some knowledge and tell me thanks later. –P

The Wattstax Experience

This some some serious ad copy: “Six hours of contemporary history edited to the essence of human entertainment”.

The Wattstax lineup was stellar and I wish I could go back in time to be there.  Who can forget Rufus Thomas’s loud suit, Isaac Hayes rockin a chain shirt, and the Bar Kays putting in work on “Son of Shaft”.  I haven’t watched or listened to Wattstax in a long time, but I’m definitely due for a refresher viewing…even if it’s just to see the mega infield dancing that resembles the world’s biggest Soul Train line.  It’s not the absolute greatest shit of all time, but def worth your time if you’re not in the know.  Also, If you listen close to the record, you’re going to hear a few famous vocal samples.

For those of you on phones and garbage monitors, the album lineup is: Issac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, Albert King, Eddie Floyd, The Bar-Kays, Carla Thomas, & The Soul Children
